Bharti airtel may have to pay over Rs 260 million as penalty for not following guidelines pertaining to re-verification of prepaid subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir, say news reports.

Following this, it is believed that airtel has asked the Department of Telecommunications? (DoT) Telecom Enforcement, Resource and Monitoring (TERM) cell of Jammu and Kashmir to review the penalty to Rs 1,000 per case instead of Rs 50,000.

The TERM Cell has approached the telecom ministry in Delhi, seeking its advice in this regard. According to the TERM cell, the company has violated the guidelines, prescribed by DoT in November 2010, regarding restoration of prepaid connections upon completion of re-verification.

The operator has allowed recharge on prepaid numbers which were not valid for re-verification.
