
The Myanmar Government has accepted Bharti Airtel’s bid application for participating in the spectrum auction in the country, say news reports.
The operator will be competing with 11 other global operators in the third and final stage of the licence awarding process to be conducted by the Myanmar Government. The other operators competing for the licences are Vodafone, Telenor, SingTel and China Mobile among others.
The Myanmar Government would be awarding two telecom licences in the country as it plans to expand telecom coverage to cover 80 per cent country by the year 2016. Currently, the country has telecom penetration of 9 per cent and close to 1.5 million mobile phone subscribers.
The Myanmar Government is expected to issue the two licences by June 2013.
