According to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), with about half of the world?s total Internet connections, Asia is driving the digital economy.

As per ICANN, the global number of internet users has surpassed three billion. With internet penetration at 48 per cent, Asia has emerged as one of the fastest growing internet markets. ICANN believes that despite available ecosystem and skillset, India is lacking in internet growth while other countries in Asia have witnessed significant growth. For example, China?s share in worldwide internet market stands at 21.97 per cent whereas India has a share of 8.33 per cent.

With Internet growth coming from outside of the US, ICANN is focusing less on English-speaking regions. Instead it is turning its attention towards other regional markets and focusing on promoting localised domain names.
