As part of the company’s restructuring, UTStarcom, Inc. is in the process of selling two business units to NewNet Communication Technologies. The units being sold handle internet protocol messaging and technologies that help cellular networks connect to other networks that use internet communication techniques.
NewNet creates text messaging technologies for telecommunication companies. The financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close in June, have not been disclosed yet.
UTStarcom’s restructuring over the past few years included the sale of multiple divisions and cutting half the company’s staff, or about 2,300 workers, mostly in China and the US, in 2009. The company intends to focus on set-top boxes and other technologies for beaming television signals via internet-based communications standards.
