According to Indian Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra), the average revenue per user (ARPU) of the cellular industry can potentially grow even without a tariff hike as data usage and penetration has increased significantly over the past one to two years.Additionally, Ind-Ra noted that the industry-wide subscriber base increased by 4 million subscribers on a month-to-month (MoM) basis in June 2021 to 1,181 million subscribers, compared to a sharp decline of 6.3 million subscribers in May 2021.

In contrast, the visitor location register subscriber base, which is a measure of active subscribers, dropped by 1.3 million subscribers in June 2021 to 985 million subscribers, the agency reported.

In terms of broadband subscribers, Ind-Ra highlighted that there was an increase of 65.1 per cent in the overall wireless subscriber base in June 2021 from 64.4 per cent in May 2021 and 47 per cent in March 2019.

Additionally, it stated that the amount of data used per user is also increasing rapidly.
