Apple Inc is reportedly planning to start iPad assembly in India, alongside its existing iPhones manufacturing plant. The move has been undertaken in line with the company’s plans to bring iPad tablet manufacturing to India.

According to industry sources, the government is preparing to unveil another set of incentives to drive local manufacturing of IT products including tablets, laptops and servers. The new performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, which is expected to be launched by end of February 2021, will offer cash-back to manufacturers for exports, with a budget of up to Rs 70 billion over five years.

In this regard, Apple is reportedly requesting the government to increase the value of the scheme to Rs 200 billion. According to Apple, it is necessary as India does not have the kind of supply chain needed for iPad production, and thus most of the components would need to be imported from China.
