An apex panel of secretaries has nudged the Department of Space (DoS) and the Ministry of Defence to favorably consider the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) request to part with all idle 5G spectrum both in the coveted 26 GHz band and 3.3 GHz-3.6 GHz frequencies.
DoT had requested both the DoS and Ministry of Defence to vacate airwaves for commercial use by telcos and rolling out 5G services.
According to industry sources, the panel has also urged the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to check if they hold any idle sub-GHz spectrum in the 700 MHz band, which can also be re-assigned to DoT.
The DoT has urged the government to release around 3,000 units of premium millimeter waves in the 26 GHz-28 GHz bands and 125 units in the 3.3 GHz – 3.6 GHz for 5G services. The airwaves are with DoS and the Ministry of Defence.
