Alcatel-Lucent has won a three-year contract from Africa Cellulaire (Africell) Burundi for the supply and installation of a nationwide GSM/EDGE network in Burundi. According to the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will install and deploy an end-to-end GSM/EDGE network, including base station subsystems, nextgeneration mobile switching centres, and radio optimisation design and consulting services. In addition, the company will provide its microwave transmission solution to support voice and data traffic from the base stations to the core network, and will be responsible for network maintenance. The first phase of the contract is valued at $20 million.
