Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) have moved to the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) challenging the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) demand notices for penalties levied against the two telcos for denying points of interconnection (PoIs) to Reliance Jio in 2016.

The move comes after the DoT had recently issued demand notices to both the telcos to pay Rs 30.5 billion in cumulative penalties within three weeks’ time for violating norms by denying Reliance Jio PoIs in 2016, which affected the latter’s quality of service. In particular, the DoT has demanded penalties worth Rs 10.5 billion from Airtel while Vi has to pay Rs 20 billion in penalties to the government.

TDSAT is likely to hear the matter soon.
