
As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel Reliance Jio gained 1.03 million 3.91 million subscribers respectively, while Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost 1.72 million subscribers month-on-month during December 2024. Meanwhile, the wireless subscriber base of Airtel and Jio increased to 385.31 million and 465.14 million respectively. In addition, Vi’s user base shrank to 207.26 million.
Separately, Jio further consolidated its market leadership in the wireline space in December 2024. TRAI data showed that Jio added 0.65 million wireline users, boosting its landline user base to 16.95 million. Meanwhile, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 0.03 million wireline users. In addition, Airtel added 0.16 million users, boosting its wireline user base to around 9.84 million.
Further, the month of December 2024 witnessed Airtel and Jio widened their customer market share to 33.49 per cent (from 33.45 in November 2024) and 40.42 per cent from 40.15 in the previous month respectively. Furthermore, Vi’s narrowed to 18.01 per cent as against 18.19 per cent the previous month.
Besides, TRAI data showed that Airtel and Vi lost customers 0.85 million and 0.94 million customers in rural India for wireless. Meanwhile, Jio gained 1.63 million in these geographies. The data released by the regulator also showed that overall wireless tele-density increased marginally to 84.45 per cent in December 2024 from 81.59 per cent in November 2024.
During the month of December 2024, 13.85 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 1065.35 million at the end of November 2024 to 1079.19 million at the end of December 2024.
