According to the telecom secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), artificial intelligence (AI) will make telecom networks self-healing and enhance customer services. He noted that the government is working to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and is collaborating with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to ensure that AI and telecom developments are harmonised for positive impact.
While acknowledging the benefits of AI, he also cautioned about its potential misuse, stressing the importance of vigilance and responsible deployment of technology.
Meanwhile, the DoT has developed an AI-based fraud risk indicator tool that has helped protect citizens from financial fraud. Using this tool, digital payment platforms PhonePe and Paytm have collectively prevented fraud worth Rs 2 billion and blocked over 4.8 million suspicious transactions.
Additionally, as per the minister, India continues to play a key role in shaping the global AI fairness and governance agenda through its leadership at the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24) and active contributions to the ITU’s AI standardisation framework.
