After reducing tariffs for domestic mobile roaming services, TRAI is now aiming to reduce international roaming tariffs for Indian consumers travelling abroad. The authority has requested the European Commission to allow Indian mobile users to benefit from the roaming rates applicable to European mobile users while travelling within the continent. In return, Europeans travelling to India would get cheaper roaming tariffs. The European Commission has proposed to decrease roaming charges within Europe by up to 60 per cent. The proposal, which is currently being examined, could allow mobile users to access roaming services at about Rs 40 per minute compared to the existing tariff, which ranges from Rs 60 to Rs 90 per minute.
