According to ABI Research, handset manufacturers Nokia and HTC registered a drop in handset shipments in the first quarter of 2013. While Nokia’s handset shipments declined to 62 million, HTC’s device shipments continued to decline 37 per cent year-on-year to 4.8 million.

Meanwhile, BlackBerry shipped 6 million devices in the period under consideration, while LG shipped 10.3 million smartphones and 16.2 million handsets.

Overall, an estimated 405 million handsets, including 197 million smartphones, were shipped in the first quarter of 2013. Smartphone shipments grew 38 per cent year-over-year, while feature phone shipments declined by 5.2 per cent year on year.

Shipments of all handsets grew by 12 per cent year on year in the first quarter, owing to the increasing demand for smartphones.
