According to S Krishnan, secretary, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the ministry is examining the possibility of formulating a new scheme to boost the manufacturing of electronic components in India.
During his address at the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2024, Krishnan said that the scheme would greatly assist the non-semiconductor electronics part sector. He stated the component ecosystem is a space where advanced manufacturing can take place in a significant measure. That is where states such as Tamil Nadu can significantly contribute.
Krishnan added that for a country like India, it is vital to go to the next stage of how to make it competitive for more components to come into the country. This would be the next stage of what the government wants to do with this industry. He said that programmes such as the production linked incentive (PLI) scheme have helped bring more of the component ecosystem into India. For instance, camera modules and battery modules are being produced in the country. This needs to be accelerated and the country needs to ensure that those industries are encouraged to boost domestic value addition in the electronics space.
