Addressing the Broadband India Forum (BIF), Vivek Narayan, DDG (data services), Department of Telecommunications (DoT) unveiled that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning to migrate 30,000 of its Wi-Fi hotspots to the Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) framework by June 2022.

Meanwhile, Indian railways has also stated that all its future hotspots would be under the PM-WANI framework.

In a bid to fuel broadband internet proliferation across the country, the government, in December 2020, approved the setting up of public Wi-Fi networks and access points by local shops through public data offices that will not involve any licence, fee or registration.
