As per the latest data release by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel continued to be the only telco to add subscribers, gaining 1.59 million users in February 2022 to close the month at 358.07 million subscribers.
In contrast, Reliance Jio lost 3.66 million users to end the month at 402.73 million subscribers while Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost another 1.53 million users in February 2022, taking its subscribers tally to 263.59 million.
Meanwhile, India’s total wireless subscribers decreased from 1,145.24 million at the end of January to 1,141.53 million at the end of February 2022, representing a month-on-month decline of 0.32 per cent.
Also, the TRAI data showed that wireless subscription in urban areas decreased from 627.12 million at the end of January to 625.19 million at the end of February and wireless subscription in rural areas also decreased from 518.13 million to 516.34 million during the same period.
With respect to the market share, as of February 28, 2022, the private access service providers cumulatively held 89.74 per cent market share of the wireless subscribers whereas Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) had a collective market share of 10.26 per cent.
Jio held the largest share of the market at 35.28 per cent, followed by Airtel with 31.37 per cent and Vi with 23.09 per cent at the end of February 2022. BSNL and MTNL each had a share of 9.98% and 0.28%, respectively.
