The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reportedly imposed a cumulative penalty of Rs 1.5 billion on telecom operators for failing to effectively control spam calls and messages. The penalty, levied for a three-year period starting in 2020, has been, however, challenged by the telecom operators.

While the regulatory framework empowers telecom service providers to act against unregistered senders through measures ranging from suspension of connections to disconnection of all connections for up to one year and complete blacklisting across all operators in the country, such action is initiated only on the basis of customer complaints.
