According to the union minister, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India has emerged as a preferred destination for data centres as the country has ample electricity capacity and a robust national power grid capable of handling surges in demand.
He noted that India’s 500 GW national grid is among the largest in the world, providing the scale and reliability required to support energy-intensive infrastructure such as data centres.
On coal-based power generation, he said India would continue to take a pragmatic approach. Any addition to thermal capacity would be driven by the country’s domestic needs, even as India simultaneously works towards expanding its clean energy framework. He added that thermal power requirements are projected to rise to 307 GW by 2035.
