According to the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, in a written response to a query raised in the Rajya Sabha on July 31, 2025, India has made significant progress in expanding its optical fibre cable (OFC) network, achieving a cumulative total of 0.698 million route kilometres (rkm) across the country as of March 31, 2025.
Among all states, Tamil Nadu registered the highest OFC deployment with 0.087 million rkm followed closely by Kerala at 0.082 million rkm. Andhra Pradesh recorded 0.071 million rkm and Telangana 0.065 million rkm reflecting robust development in digital infrastructure in these regions. The continued growth of the OFC network plays a critical role in expanding broadband access and enabling digital services across India.
Further, the OFC rollout aims to strengthen digital connectivity nationwide and support India’s expanding digital ecosystem. Additionally, several states and union territories have made major contributions to this effort, with certain regions demonstrating particularly rapid progress.
