Reliance Industries has reportedly revealed that Reliance Jio’s indigenous end-to-end 5G technology stack is gaining global recognition, presenting a promising monetisation opportunity. The highlight of this stack is the proprietary multi-point universal broadband radio (UBR) technology, developed for home broadband connections, a solution that global telecom operators have attempted but failed to replicate effectively.

UBR enables multiple homes in a micro-cluster, around 50 per cent to 60 per cent, to be connected via a single 5G cell site, significantly reducing deployment costs. The technology is the result of innovation by Mimosa Networks, a US-based communications equipment company acquired by Jio Platforms through its wholly owned subsidiary, Radisys Corporation, for $60 million in August 2023.

Much of the UBR equipment is manufactured by US-based Sanmina Corporation, which operates in India via a joint venture with Reliance. Further, leveraging this UBR-backed architecture, Jio crossed 20 million home broadband connections in the June quarter of 2025-26, including 7.4 million AirFiber fixed wireless access (FWA) connections.
