According to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), it is executing a “multi-fold strategy” to launch commercial 5G services in parallel with its ongoing 4G network densification, led by a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-anchored consortium that is adding 19,000 additional sites.
BSNL’s 5G rollout is built on a standalone (SA) core architecture, enabling capabilities such as network slicing for enterprise-grade connectivity, industrial internet of thing (IIoT), and mission-critical services. The company has already demonstrated the service in Hyderabad, utilising both 700 megahertz (MHz) and 3.3 gigahertz (GHz) bands to ensure robust rural coverage and high urban capacity. All deployments rely on indigenous technology under the 5G network-as-a-service (NaaS) initiative.
Further, the operator plans to expand its Quantum 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) trials to Bengaluru, Pune, Gwalior, Chandigarh, Puducherry, and Visakhapatnam within this calendar year.
Furthermore, as per BSNL, once its 4G network stabilises, it expects improved customer retention and a revenue growth of over 10 per cent in the mobile segment. The company noted a positive shift in adoption of its 700 MHz spectrum as more 5G-compatible devices enter the market. It is also in advanced talks with local smartphone manufacturers to launch affordable bundling options for consumers.
In addition, there has been emphasises on the urgency for BSNL to scale its 4G deployments significantly to remain competitive with private operators. BSNL reiterated its mission to extend the benefits of next-generation digital connectivity to all Indians, with a special focus on underserved rural and remote regions to fulfil the vision of a digitally-empowered society.
