According to Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Union Minister of Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, India is poised to witness the fastest satellite communication (satcom) rollout globally. He projected that India’s satcom market would expand to $20 billion by 2028, which is nearly ten times its current size of $2.3 billion.

Further, Scindia emphasised that satellite telecom technology would serve as a complementary layer to existing communication services. The minister also noted that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is currently reviewing Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI’s) recent recommendations on space spectrum allocation. These include a proposed 4 per cent spectrum usage charge (SUC) on operators’ annual adjusted gross revenue (AGR) and a five-year licence period for spectrum allocation, extendable by another two years.

Further, these recommendations, along with other key proposals, are expected to be placed before the Cabinet for approval shortly.
