As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio gained 1.65 million and 0.68 million subscribers respectively, while Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost 1.33 million subscribers month-on-month during January 2025. Meanwhile, the wireless subscriber base of Airtel and Jio increased to 386.96 million and 465.82 million respectively. In addition, Vi’s user base shrank to 205.92 million.

Separately, Jio dissipated its market leadership in the wireline space in January 2025. TRAI data showed that Jio lost 4.33 million wireline users, reducing its landline user base to 12.61 million. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) also lost 0.03 million wireline users. Meanwhile, Airtel added 0.11 million users, boosting its wireline user base to around 9.96 million.

Further, the month of January 2025 witnessed Jio and Airtel widening its customer market share to 40.46 per cent and 33.61 from 40.42 and 33.49, respectively, in the previous month. Furthermore, Vi narrowed its customer base to 17.89 per cent as against 18.01 per cent in December 2024.

Besides, TRAI data showed that Airtel and Jio gained 1.50 million and 0.38 million customers respectively in rural India for wireless. Meanwhile, Vi lost 0.89 million in these geographies. The data released by the regulator also showed that overall wireless tele-density increased marginally to 84.54 per cent in January 2025 from 84.45 per cent in December 2024.

In the month of January 2025, 14.14 million subscribers submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP). With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 1079.19 million at the end of December 2024 to 1,093.33 million at the end of January 2025.
