The Supreme Court has requested a response from the Centre regarding a public interest litigation (PIL) that alleges a significant increase in cyber-crimes and the “nuisance” of unsolicited calls in the country.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar issued a notice to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), acknowledging that government agencies are making efforts to address the issue.
The PIL seeks a directive for telecom network operators to implement the calling name presentation service (CNAP). This service allows for the identification of the caller’s name, which is typically shown in the caller ID section of a phone, potentially enabling recipients to make informed decisions about incoming calls and reduce spam calls.
