According to a report by Techarc, smartphone sales in India are likely to cross 100 million units, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G-enabled handsets in the second half (H2) of 2024.
It stated that the annual sale of smartphones in India is between 155-158 million units, representing a 7-9 per cent year-on-year increase in volume.
As per the report, consumers by default expect their smartphone to be 5G-enabled irrespective of the price segment they are looking for a smartphone within. Meanwhile, the gap between 5G live smartphones and 5G subscribers will continue to remain, with 70-75 per cent 5G smartphone users using a 5G service.
It added that the users in the semi urban and rural territories, where Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is rolling out its 4G services, may gain the most, and its subscribers are expected to buy a 5G smartphone over 4G smartphones opening opportunity for Rs 8,000-12,000 (basic segment) of 5G smartphones. It further highlighted that with this potential of 5G driven by consumer preferences and the smartphone ecosystem recalibration, 80 per cent 5G smartphones are expected to be sold in H2 2024.
