According to a report by CyberMedia Research (CMR), 5G smartphone shipments in India grew by 56 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024, increasing the share of fifth- generation-enabled handsets to 79 per cent in the market.
As per the report, Vivo led the 5G smartphone segment with a 21 per cent share, followed by Samsung (20 per cent) during the June quarter. In Q2, 5G smartphones in the price band of Rs 10,000 to Rs 13,000 grew by over 200 per cent year-on-year. Meanwhile, Realme and Oppo secured fourth and fifth ranks, respectively, with a share of 13 per cent and 9 per cent.
Apple captured a 5 per cent market share in the smartphone market in Q2 2024, with a majority of the volume contributed by the iPhone 15 series.
Motorola saw a more than 175 per cent year-on-year growth in Q2 2024.
Further report noted that, the premium segment, comprising smartphones priced above Rs 25,000, has enjoyed robust growth, with a 9 per cent YoY increase. By contrast, the overall feature phone market recorded a 1 per cent annual growth.
However, 2G feature phone shipments decreased by 6 per cent during the same period. The 4G feature phone shipments recorded 39 per cent during the quarter, majorly driven by Jio capturing 68 per cent market share followed by Nokia at 28 per cent.
Additionally, CMR estimated that the India smartphone market is expected to grow 7-8 per cent in 2024, driven by strong demand for 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) smartphones.
