The Union Home Ministry has cleared a 19-month old proposal from China?s telecom gear maker, Huawei, to setup a unit in Tamil Nadu.
The company had sought the consent of the ministry for setting up a unit for manufacturing electronics/telecom hardware and support services at the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited Special Economic Zone, Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. The company, however, would be required to reserve key technical positions for Indian nationals and also get separate security clearances from the Home Ministry in order to appoint a foreign national as its chairman, managing director, chief executive officer and chief financial officer.
It had also applied for the domestic tariff area status. The request will now be taken up by the Commerce Ministry.
