
According to the latest report by Ericsson, globally, operators added 108 million mobile subscribers during the quarter ended March 2015 to take the total number of mobile subscribers to 7.2 billion as of March 2015. At 26 million, India recorded the highest addition in number of mobile subscribers. It was followed by China (8 million), Myanmar (5 million), Indonesia (4 million) and Japan (4 million). Further, the global mobile penetration reached 99 per cent during quarter ended March 2015.
Meanwhile, smartphones accounted for about to 75 per cent of all mobile phones sold in quarter ended March 2015, compared to around 65 per cent sold during the corresponding quarter in 2014. The report projects that by 2020, 70 per cent of the world’s population will be using smartphones and 90 per cent will be covered by mobile broadband networks. According to the report, an expanding range of applications and business models coupled with falling modem costs are key factors driving the growth of connected devices.
