The US-based networking solutions provider, Cisco, has recently released its tenth annual Cisco visual networking index (VNI) forecast. As per the company, the Internet protocol (IP) traffic in India will quadruple between 2014 and 2019 at a compound annual growth rate of 33 per cent. This growth will be spurred by rising usage of mobile data and additional networked devices, among others.
As per the VNI, IP traffic in India will reach 4.0 exabytes per month in 2019, up from 967 petabytes per month in 2014. The average fixed broadband speed in India will grow 2.9 fold from 4.0 Mbps in 2014 to 12 Mbps in 2019. The number of networked devices is likely to increase from 1.1 billion to 1.6 billion during the same period.
The expected drivers of growth are surging mobile data consumption, proliferation in networked devices, faster broadband speed and higher usage of videos. As a result of these drivers, India’s mobile share in total IP traffic generated globally is expected to increase from 9 per cent in 2014 to 28 per cent in 2019.
