The government will roll-out free Wi-Fi network in 2,500 cities and towns in India over the next three years. The project for Wi-Fi deployment will be implemented by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) with an investment of about Rs 70 billion. In order to cover these cities, the operator will deploy around 50,000 to 60,000 Wi-Fi hotspots as part of the project. Beginning by 2015-16, the Wi-Fi services will be offered to the subscribers of all mobile operators.

According to the project, the free availability of the Wi-Fi service will be for a limited period, after which the users will have to pay for further usage. Initially, the services will be launched in Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Bhopal, Jaipur, Patna, Indore, Chandigarh and Ludhiana. .
