The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to request the Telecom Standards Development Society of India (TSDSI) to work as the apex agency to recommend Indian security standards for telecom products, including the mobile devices running on Indian networks.

As the apex body, TSDSI will work with the Bureau of Industrial Standards (BIS) and Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC). It will also work with international agencies like European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), US-based Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) and Japan’s Association of Radio Industries & Businesses (ARIB) to ensure that India’s security concerns are represented while formulation of future global telecom product standards.

The recommendations by TSDSI on the security standards will be approved by the DoT, prior to its notification to the government. Once notified, the guidelines will have to be adhered to by all telecom network equipment and handset makers operating in India.
