Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) plans to offer broadband services in 900 towns and cities across the country using fibre to the x (FTTx) technology.

The FTTx service to be launched by the company is in addition to its plan to introduce pan-India 4G services by the end of 2014. RJIL?s plan to offer broadband services through FTTx is expected to help the company reduce its dependence on 4G spectrum for providing high speed internet services.

In its annual report 2013-14, RJIL has stated that it has completed a detailed planning for pan-India implementation of the infrastructure required for providing broadband services using FTTx. Further, the company has already established Wi-Fi hot spots in eight locations at Ahmedabad and nine locations at Baroda and Surat.

Since, the launch of the Wi-Fi hot spots, RJIL has provided high speed internet trials to over 55,000 devices. At present, users are provided 72 hours of free Wi-Fi usage which can be extended through reactivation.

In the recently concluded spectrum auction in February 2014, RJIL won spectrum in the 1800 MHz band in 14 service areas. The spectrum won by the company can be used for providing 4G services. Going forward, the company plans to offer pan-India 4G services using long term evolution (LTE) frequency division duplex technology in the 1800 MHz band and LTE time-division duplexing technology in the 2300 MHz band.
