The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked service providers to submit a compliance report regarding the accuracy level achieved by them in tracking a subscriber?s location. According to DoT, only Tata Teleservices Limited has complied with its request.
In May 2011, the government had amended existing licencing terms and conditions and asked operators to provide the location details of subscribers as part of call data records. As per the amendments in the licencing norms, law enforcement agencies are mandated to track 30 per cent of mobile users in urban areas within 50 metres of the location identified by an operator. Further, operators are required to provide the location details of 50 per cent of subscribers within 300 metres in semi-urban and rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and other north eastern states.
