According to Infonetics, the mobile machine to machine (M2M) module market is expected to grow from $849 million in the first half of 2013 to $3 billion by 2017.  Between 2012 and 2017, the M2M module market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 14 per cent.

The research firm states that in the first half of 2013, GSM/GPRS/EDGE technologies made up for 59 per cent of the total mobile M2M modules shipped in the first half of 2013. With global networks migrating to 3G and 4G networks, the share of GSM/GPRS/EDGE technologies in the (M2M) module market is expected to decline significantly. By 2017, long term evolution technology will account for 12 per cent of the total mobile M2M module revenue by 2017.

The mobile M2M module market is also witnessing consolidation with global player such as Sierra Wireless? and Telit acquiring vendors including AnyData and ILS Technology, respectively. Globally, North America continues to lead the mobile M2M module market followed by markets including Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.

Going forward, Infonetics forecasts that over the next 12 to 36 months the mobile M2M module market will further witness consolidation and evaluation of emerging M2M business models in the next 12 to 36 months.
