The Telecom Commission has approved the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India?s (TRAI) proposal which allows operators to engage in spectrum trading and sharing.

Earlier, TRAI had recommended that the service providers should be allowed to sell spectrum won by them in an auction and the spectrum for which the operators have paid prescribed market value to the government. However, the Department of Telecommunications had taken a contrary view and stated that the telecom industry was not in a position to support the concept of spectrum trading.

DoT?s views notwithstanding, the Telecom Commission has approved spectrum trading for the operators.

In fact, the Planning Commission had also supported to allow spectrum trading amongst players on the ground that the trading will enable efficient usage of spectrum. It would also enhance the value of spectrum in the auction because the operators will be able to generate additional revenue by selling these airwaves.
