BlackBerry is planning to layoff about 4,500 employees, reducing its global headcount by 40 per cent. Currently, the company has an employee base of over 12,700.

BlackBerry?s move is aimed at streamlining its existing operations and reducing its widening losses.  Further, to stem its losses the company is working towards lowering its operating expenses by 50 per cent by 2015.

Currently, the handset manufacturer is looking for a buyer as it is steadily losing market share to leading smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung and Apple.
