BlackBerry has withdrawn the extension of its instant messaging and chat service, BBM to devices functioning on Google?s Android operating system and Apple?s iPhone. The company?s decision has come in the wake of release of an unauthorised BBM application online ahead of the official launch of the service.

According to the company, it witnessed over 1.1 million active BBM users in the first 8 hours prior to the official launch of the application. To address the security breach, BlackBerry has decided to put on hold the global launch of BBM application on handsets functioning on Android?s operating system. The company is in the process of disabling its unreleased BBM application.

Going forward, BlackBerry has plans to launch the application in a phased manner.
