BlackBerry has extended its instant messaging and chat service, BBM to devices functioning on Google?s Android operating system and Apple?s iPhone.
The move will enable BlackBerry to compete with free messaging services such as WhatsApp, WeChat and Nimbuzz.
According to Sunil Lalvani, managing director, BlackBerry India, by opening up BBM to other platforms, the company is expanding the engagement levels of its existing 60 million BBM users with other mobile phone brands. Further, it is an attempt to bring back some of the users who were once on BlackBerry but shifted to other platforms because BBM service was limited only to BlackBerry phones.
