Bharti Airtel along with SoftBank Mobile has conducted field trials using satellite transmission lines to provide 3G services at lower costs in difficult terrains in regions such as Africa.
The field trials were carried out in Kenya. According to the company, the technology is important for developing telecom network in rural areas in Africa where commercialisation of 3G services is challenging. However, following the trials, Bharti Airtel and SoftBank Mobile have validated technologies and methods of using a communications satellite for providing communication services in rural areas at a low cost.
