The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to issue a notice for Rs 1 billion to Vodafone India for the alleged violation of licence norms in two circles during 2002 and 2005, say news reports. DoT has stated that Vodafone India was found using a call routing system which led to monetary loss to the exchequer.
At the time, the operator was offering subscribers a local dialing service. As part of the service, local call rates were applicable even while roaming. By routing incoming calls as local, customers paid lower roaming charges. According to DoT, this caused revenue loss to the Government in the form of lower licence fee from long distance operations.
DoT is planning to issue the notice to Vodafone India after having received a reply to its show-cause notice from the operator on July 13, 2013.
