Reliance Communications (RCOM) and Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) have entered into a 2G intra-circle (ICR) roaming agreement. Under the agreement, RCOM will use 5,000 towers owned by TTSL across 14 GSM circles while the latter will gain access to an equal number of towers in RCOM?s CDMA network.
The tie-up is expected to help both the service providers increase their network coverage. For RCOM, the 2G ICR agreement with TTSL is the third of such tie-ups, following partnerships with other operators such as Aircel and Loop Mobile. The 2G ICR agreement is likely to help TTSL extend its network coverage particularly following its move to surrender 21.25 MHz of additional spectrum in circles, barring Delhi and Mumbai. TTSL?s decision has come over as a result of the Department of Telecommunications? directive to operators offering CDMA services to surrender additional spectrum beyond 2.5 MHz.
