According to Infonetics Research, Cisco continues to lead the global carrier router and switch market with a revenue share of 39 per cent in the first quarter of 2013.

For the period under review, Alcatel Lucent moved up a place to be ranked second, pushing Huawei to the third place. The research firm adds that there is an intense competition for the third place between Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, and Juniper Networks in the carrier router and switch market.

Further, the global carrier router and switch market registered a decline of 17 per cent in the first quarter of 2013. A weaker demand for telecom equipment from service providers in Europe impacted the growth of the global carrier router and switch market. However, the market in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, and Caribbean and Latin America declined by double digits.

Despite decline in demand for carrier router and switches in leading markets, Infonetics Research expects the router and switch market to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.8 per cent through 2017. The transition from time-division multiplexing to packet-based network and exponential growth in video traffic are the key growth drivers of the global carrier router and switch market.
