According to research firm Nielsen, despite encouraging adoption of smartphones in India, the users continue to prefer websites for online shopping instead of accessing shopping applications on their devices.

About 25 per cent of the smartphone-users in the country prefer to shop online instead of availing various shopping applications on their smartphones. The research firm adds that at present shopping applications are in a very nascent stage with just three per cent of the smartphone users accessing them. In comparison one in four smartphone users (about 25 per cent) of access shopping websites at least once a month, indicating a preference for the website platform.

The results are apart of a study titled ?Nielsen Informate Mobile Insights? which surveyed 10,000 smartphone-users. According to the study, a greater percentage of smartphone users aged over 40 years, access shopping websites at least once a month. Further, a sizeable number of smartphone-users aged between 25 and 35 years engaged in m-commerce.

The study said that with a reach of five per cent, Flipkart is the most popular shopping website. The second most preferred website for online shopping is eBay with a reach of four per cent.

As far as shopping applications are concerned, eBay has the highest penetration with just over 1 per cent of smartphone-users accessing the application at least once a month.  Flipkart is ranked second with a reach of just under one per cent.
