Sistema Shyam TeleServices Limited (SSTL) has requested the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for a temporary licence to continue offering services in the country, say news reports.

In a letter to R. Chandrashekhar, secretary, DoT, SSTL has requested for a temporary licence in case the Supreme Court directs it to close its operations. The operator wants a temporary licence until the next spectrum auction.

SSTL’s request for a temporary licence comes in the wake of the recent Supreme Court order which directed the operators, who lost their licences in February 2012 or did not participate in the recently held 2G spectrum auction, to cease operations with immediate effect.

In a related development, the Supreme Court had also dismissed curative petitions filed by other operators including Videocon, Idea Cellular and Tata Teleservices. Earlier, these operators had filed a petition with the Supreme Court to revoke the 2G licence cancellation order passed by the court in February 2012.

However, in an official statement, SSTL claimed that a separate order would be issued by the Supreme Court in its case and therefore its operations in the country remained unaffected by the order.
