According to Canalys, a third of all mobile phones shipped in the fourth quarter of 2012 were Android-based smartphones.
Android, as a mobile operating platform, led the smartphone market with a share of 34 per cent. Apple iOS had a market share of 11 per cent. Other vendors in the list of top five smartphone makers were Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo.
Further, in 2012 the worldwide smartphone market registered a growth of 37 per cent. In over 50 countries, a total of 438.1 million units of smartphone were manufactured. In the fourth quarter of 2012, Samsung led the smartphone market by selling 62.9 million units. It had a market share of 29 per cent. Apple was positioned second with a market share of 22.1 percent. Huawei was ranked third as it shipped 11.5 million smartphones in the quarter under review. Lenovo with the shipment of 9.5 million units had 4.4 per cent market share. For the fourth quarter of 2012 about 98 per cent of smartphone sales for Lenovo were in China.
