The Myanmar telecom space is generating interest from various global players. As per news reports, Telenor, Axiata, Singapore Telecommunications and ST Telemedia, are exploring options to foray into this space.
Myanmar is reportedly offering two licenses to expand telecom coverage to as much as 80 per cent of the country by 2016. As per estimates, in December 2012, the country had 5.44 million wireless subscribers, with a 9 per cent penetration rate. Its fixed-line penetration rate is about 1 per cent.
The licenses will reportedly be issued by June 2013 and will be valid for 20 years, with an option for renewal.
