The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to refund Rs 50 million to Tata Communications from the penalty paid by the operator for alleged violation of terms and conditions of international long distance (ILD) licence, say news reports.

TDSAT has also directed DoT to refund the penalty amount to Tata Communications with four weeks, failing which, DoT would have to pay the penalty amount along with the interest at the rate of nine per cent. Earlier, in September 28, 2012, TDSAT had cancelled the Rs 50 million penalty imposed on Tata Communications by DoT on the grounds that DoT did not follow the proper process while imposing a fine on the operator.

DoT had imposed a penalty on Tata Communications for providing international private lease circuits to a foreign company in violation of ILD licence.
