Telecom Commission has approved Rs 15 billion subsidy for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to expand its landline operations in rural areas, say news reports.

The Telecom Commission has approved Rs 15 billion subsidy out of the total proposed subsidy of Rs 27.5 billion to BSNL for the landline connections it installed before April 1, 2002.

Earlier, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had recommended a subsidy of Rs 27.5 billion for two years which included a subsidy of Rs 15 billion for the first year and Rs 12.5 billion for the second year. BSNL had requested the Telecom Commission for extending a subsidy of Rs 25.8 billion per year for providing connections in rural areas.
