
A study by Ericsson states that in 2011, India and China accounted for 35 per cent of 4.1 billion active mobile service users worldwide.
In the fourth quarter of 2011, global mobile penetration reached 85 per cent with mobile subscriptions growing to six billion. The Ericsson Traffic and Market Data Report states that the actual number of subscribers stood at 4.1 billion, keeping in mind that subscribers have multiple connections.
As per the report, mobile services continue to be dominated by GSM services with a market share of 75 per cent. Other platforms such as CDMA and HSPA (3G) accounted for 15 per cent market share each. According to the study, there is a strong market for smartphones in all the regions with approximately 30 per cent of all handsets sold in 2011 being smartphones.
