Mobile number portability (MNP) has caught on well in the Indian telecom space, say news reports.

According to industry estimates, at end-March 2012, over 42 million users availed of the facility.

Of these, Bharti Airtel witnessed a net gain of 1.2 million subscribers, Vodafone India, 2.89 million and Idea Cellular, 0.93 million.

Meanwhile, Reliance Communications and TATA DOCOMO lost 1.47 million and 1.21 million users respectively, while Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 0.76 million users.

Also, Aircel lost 0.36 million, Uninor lost 0.26 million and Videocon lost 0.27 million net subscribers.
